My parakeet had labored breathing three weeks ago so we took him to the vet. He was put on an antibiotic regimen following the diagnosis of pneumonia. One week later, he was back to his normal chipper self and we took him back to the vet for a follow-up. She said that he was not out of the woods yet and said that he could still go into a relapse. We continued with the antibiotic regimen for another two weeks. Two days ago, his condition seemed to have deteriorated with a slight labored breathing and reduced alertness and activity. We took him to the vet today and said that his infection had been eradicated. However, his breathing (occasionally making a whistling sound) could be due to either scar tissue due to his pneumonia or worse still, a tumor in his esophagus which could cause some obstruction. Our hearts sank. What is your expert opinion and how frequent does such a tumor occur in a parakeet? How long does he have?

Answers:

GO TOO A VET! oxygen tank, get them at any local hospital Sounds to me more like chronic heart failure, it depends how old he is and how happy he is. My daughter's canary is 9 now and labours to breath everyday, but he still gets some good hours between Noon and 3 before nodding off, he's just old. Make sure he spends from dusk till noon covered in the dark so he gets maximum rest whether he's old or just having trouble to recover. Sounds like an pneumonia --- keep on the treatment. Also, look at the cage – clean with soap -- then 3% peroxide and let dry. I honestly hate to hear this about your beloved pet. I also dont want to seem rude here by saying this, but you should consider the fact that most people on PetQnA.com are not qualified to answer your question here. Its a sad thing that your per is sick and i do hope that you get some good answers on here that help you out. But an expert opinion on PetQnA.com is going to be hard to find. I would consider just taking your pet to the vet and getting a second opinion from a different vet if you can. More than one doctor will have more than one opinion on any kind of treatment or diagnosis. So do consider taking your pet to more than one vet soon..before its problem gets worse. but dont worry yourself over this.whatever it is wrong more than likely it can be fixed as long as you have the money to spend on it. good luck, i hope your pet gets well soon and you find the right kind of help. I am sorry to read about your bird. Your vet is correct, the cause could be either one, however, neither is good for the bird's health. Tumors are by no means rare in parakeets and are the cause of many sudden deaths because birds hide being ill. How much more longer your bird will survive, I do not know. Some live for months after illness is found, others hours. I hate to hear about your bird. I have a parakeet that I dearly love too. I hate to say it, but if it does have a tumor, the only treatment may be death. There may be some dampness still in his lungs that the Vet, did not hear in the visit. Fresh air helps if the humidity is low. If not keep the cage from drafts, call the Vet and tell them what is new, and ask him to change meds, the ones he was on, may not be working any longer. Also try your local feed store, they often have tablets you can put into the water that will cure respiratory ailments. Budgerigars show a high incidence of tumors. I have lost three to tumors. That said, there are many possible causes of wheezing and other breathing problem in Budgerigars. One of the most common, especially pet birds,is a deficiency of Iodine in the diet, which in turn, results in the swelling of the thyroid glands, which press on the windpipe.Does he have an Iodine block?? In some cases, these glands may enlarge over tenfold, from a normal size of about 2mm.

Pressure on the respitory system, resulting from growths typically on the Kidney's and reproductive organs, often causes breathing problems in an individual which otherwise appears healthy. There is no cure,in this instance, and so, the bird will probably need to be put to sleep, painlessly,by a vet. Decide for yourself if you think your bird is suffering. This will be very upsetting for you,but please, think of your bird.I cannot say how long he may have,I had mine put to sleep, but as birds are small, so I would say not too long. Sorry..
