Because birds and chicks are the natural prey for all kinds of nasty predators, thus, women are the natural prey for all kinds of predatory men. Does this help? because chicks have great legs Men can't tell the difference. Just kidding. I think it's because originally they thought of all women as small and fragile like birds and chicks. Then after that it just stuck. Because in days past, woman were more knowledgable about trivial stuff like animals, sewing, tea parties, etc. But men, being the big c*cks full of pomp, were ignorant and assumed that it was the female (like women) that were all decked out in color and flourish. So, that being said, they would call women birds and chicks after the fluff and pomp of the birds, not knowing that they were wrong.

P.S. this is an educated guess. Mercy! What a question. Having been married three times I want to say it's because women never stop pecking, but I think it's like referring to men as dogs.

It's simply a derogatory comment. Chick, bird, babe, doll, etc. all imply a lower position in the "pecking" order.

OTOH, if you know a person quite well you might create "pet names" for each other that are endearing. But I've found that pet names can really wear on the nerves after the "funny" wears off. because when women dress in colorful close they look like birds.
