I want to humanley disuade them from doing it without having to kill them. However, I will kill them if no other means are effective.

Serious answers please.

It might just be because I'm from South Texas. You can try to trap them, and release far away from your home. But check with your local wildlife department (for instance where i live its illegal to trap and release squirrels, but its fine to shoot them.) You might have to make everyone else responding mad but you may have to dispose of them. they have predatory bird recordings like predatory sounds of hawks and owls. Switch to Terra Cotta Shingles- and if you kill a woodpecker you'll for ever be known as a PECKERWOOD, so walk softly my friend. The birds are using your shingles as a storage area for winter feed or a fly by snack bar,and since they have not enough cash to rent at "Byrds Storage Sheds" your the lucky provider. My neighbor had this problem. I think that he resolved it after several years of trying different tactics by painting his natural wood siding. I have put several links to information on preventing woodpecker damage below. I don't know if there are sound or motion detecting sprinklers, but that may work.

If I were having the problem, I would check with the county extension office and the closest state fish, wildlife and parks office for advice. Those folks get paid from your taxes to help with such a problem.
