I live in the high country where it snows occasionally and have to move in January. I've been feeding the local finches and many assorted birds for almost 3 years through every season. I'm worried about how they will do. I know some have come to depend on me. Should I wean them from the seed I offer them..or? I'm very worried about this.

Answers:

wild animals are very smart aabout finding alternate food sources. You might feed them just every other day or every few days so that they will learn where to find other sources now, before they HAVE to There is only so much food after the season is over. I don't think you can wean them. Try to find someone who will take over until spring. Then stop feeding the birds so that they can search out homes near other food sources. They will suffer a long slow death from starvation. Don't worry about them. They only come around for the free food. When you leave they will find other food, either growing naturally, or from someone else who loves watching birds. We sometimes feed the birds here. We also put out food and apples for the deer that come up. If they aren't munching on free food they are browsing on the fresh growth and blackberry briars. Animals are incredibly resilient and resourceful. I am sure they will manage when you are gone. The important thing is to enjoy them during the rest of your time there. do you feed them from your house? if so, leave a note for the new people as they may be bird lovers as well. I would stop feeding them now. So that they have a chance to find other food sources.

But maybe talk to the new people are moving into your house. They might enjoy feeding the birds. Don't be worried. They will find food!! There are many people just like you who also feed birds, and birds know where the food is! you could ask the people who move into your house to do it or you could just feed them less each day then eventually stop feeding them They will look elsewhere for food!

Reduce the food gradually so they start looking elsewhere. Don't worry God will provide food for your birds
