Indian or other spicy foods cause my eyes to water and burn; will my birds be ok when we cook very spicy foods in the home?

If it is not good for them, what can I do during that cooking time to keep them safe?

Answers:

Relax,

Simply observe them while you are cooking. If they seem to display discomfort, there is your answer.

While birds probably should not be housed in the kitchen proper, it's not because of ordinary kitchen smells.

North 790044-87 is making a reference to Teflon fumes. The Teflon material on pans when overheated to a scorching temperature, can and will make your birds extremely ill if it doesn't flat out kill them.

This is not the case during ordinary use. Simply using a Teflon pan normally will not kill your birds.

HOWEVER! With that said.why take a chance? I no longer keep Teflon pans in my home. I can't guarantee that I won't put one on and forget it's there. Just as I cannot be absolutely sure that a guest won't screw up and burn one.

I understand your concern. What you didn't state was whether your eyes burned when you were doing the cooking or the actual eating of the food.

If your eyes are burning just from the fumes of Cooking dinner..Man!You like stuff spicy at your house!

I simply haven't encountered this problem or question before.but I would simply watch your birds and see if they are reacting negatively to the smells.

Have you thought of simply opening a window? Why would it hurt the parakeet's eyes? You could just put the bird in another room behind closed doors till it clears out. Not sure about cooked but I've given my birds those long, slim red peppers (uncooked) you find in Chinese or Mexican food and they love them. I think they'd ignore it if it wasn't tasty or was uncomfortable. Never, ever house a bird in a kitchen! NEVER!

Cooking produces all manner of toxins that are seriously harmful to birds. The cage should be as far from the kitchen as possible! ALWAYS! Maybe you should have some form of extraction unit fitted in the kitchen so that the vapours from your cooking do not infiltrate the rest of the house. Birds are very sensitive to polutants of any sort.
