I have a zebra finch, had him for about two years, but until recently I was in the dark about color mutations. I have noticed that in pictures Zebra Finches have black tails, mine has a grey tail, is this a simple color mutation?

Yes, zebra finches can have several color varieties. One of mine is pure white with just a few brown spots on it's lower sides. I had a pure white one for a while. There are 3 or 4 varieties of colors which are fairly common, and then there are other rarer colors as well. The ones that you see in pics is the type of zebra finch that you would see in the wild, but zebras raised in captivity have many different mutations. They are real cuties, love their little beep beeps. I used to have zebra finches, i cant remember but i think one of mine had a grey tail too. It's not a big deal, they have a lot of variety. Some zebra finches i've seen are yellow brownish or creame color too. yipes!
