why do birds stand on one leg?

It would be pretty tiring for you humans to balance on one leg for a long period of time, but it's no sweat for the birds. Because of the way their bodies are built, standing on one leg is easy--and it apparently is comfortable, too! Some scientists say that it's also a good way to conserve heat, because it takes less energy to stand on one leg than it does to stand on two. maybe because they are comfortable like that! Not all birds stand on one leg - for instance I've never seen a duck or a sparrow stand on one leg. I think the main reason why birds stand on one leg is due to how they hunt. Most of the birds, that I know of, that stand on one leg are birds that are found manily around water (such as flamingos, egrets, cranes and so on and so forth). When they step through the water they must do so very carefully for fear of scaring off any fish. So they may stand in one position for very long periods of time (sometimes on one leg - or sometimes in awkard positions which don't, at all, look comfortable to me!).

Also, maybe when standing on one leg (such as the flamingo) maybe tucking in one leg conserves body heat. Those legs are awfully long and if I had legs like that they'd be cold quite often! because they found out,if they keep changing legs to stand on,they can give thoes skinny little leg a rest? do bird walk sexy? when they shake their butts when they walk,watch there tail, (its a beach thing). mainly to keep at least one leg warm and rested . Maybe ask a vet .

What type of branches do you have in the cage for them to stand on.

They say branches are better than the sticks which come with the cage because they can develope callouses on their feet through the sticks. i ask my vet that and she said it meant that they were relaxed and content.
