Saw a bird..bigger than a robin but roughly that size. Pure white head and black with white spots on the back. Never saw one like it before. any ideas..

What State are you in? Was it long-tailed or short-tailed? Wow..well without a picture to go by.sounds like some kind of ladder-backed woodpecker or flicker. there are white headed woodpeckers.usually seen a higher elevations, and found in the western US. Although it has a black back. Not sure where you live, so not sure if this could be a possibility. There are many other woodpeckers and sapsuckers with white spotting on the back.
