i am going on holiday soon? will kitty think he has been abandoned if i send him to a cats home? do they look after him properly? i mean, do they talk.. 

It is infinitely less disruptive to the cat's psyche to stay in familiar surroundings. You will pay $15-20 to board in a cattery or vet office and at that price you can find someone to come to your home for an 45 mins or an hour and take some time to play with your cat or give it a brushing or a good pet aside from meeting its needs for food, emptying litterboxes and providing clean water.

Vet offices frequently have cards of professional pet sitters and may even recommend one. Sometimes personnel at the office like to earn extra $$ by doing this job. We had the same dilemma this year with our dog. I was worried sick about taking him to the kennel and leaving him for 2 weeks. I thought about him every day and raced over to pick him up when we got back only to find he was fine. Well cared for, happy, coat looked great etc. Not underweight. I think the worry and guilt is all you own. Their job is to care for your pet and return it safe, well and healthy. Don't worry. Ours have never been "traumatised", but they have made it quite clear that they were not too pleased! Before you book kitty in, go and see the cattery for yourself. Follow your instinct and ask questions.

If you do leave kitty there, leave his blanket, or an old garment of yours with him.

On your return, Kitty will obviously be pleased to see you, but may then treat you with disdain for daring to leave him. You know how cats are!

An alternative is to leave a key with a trusted neighbour, friend or family. That way, Kitty will be less disturbed. I don't know how they treat cats at the particular cattery that you are using. Like all things(inc.homes for the aged), they vary.
