Some vets do not advise the surgery. If you have it done it can cost anywhere from $500-1500. Do not breed the dog, it is a genetic condition. I work at a vet clinic and recently rescued a chihuahua with luxating patellas. We do the surgery there and I can get it done pretty cheaply because I work there, however I'm choosing not to have it done. I've had several of the vets there check her out and asked their opinion on it and they all said that luxating patellas are not painful and if it were their dog they wouldn't put her through the surgery. It can be a pretty painful and intense surgery. In many cases they have to actually move the ligament that holds the patella to a different anchor spot on the leg bone. At our clinic the cost of the surgery is about $500 but it can cost up to $1500 at some places. Good luck with your decision. CALL YOUR BREEDER

Whether or not you do the surgery depends upon how much it interfers with her quality of life - getting around, having fun, causing her discomfort. Some dogs have to have the surgery because of these issues, some don't. She may be okay for now but bone and joint abnormalities lead to arthritis. Then they need surgery to repair the arthtritic changes as best as can be done (not 100% fixed but made a little better) Talk the your vet about the LONG TERM prognosis
