If he is upset about being separated from you:
- don't allow him to follow you around the house all the time. Use a crate, baby gate, or tether to keep him in the room while you go to another room for a brief period (to get a drink or go to the bathroom). Ignore him when you return to the room. He can't accept you being out of the house for hours if he gets upset when you are across the house for three minutes, right? As he gets more comfortable, increase the amount of time you are out of the room.
- use Comfort Zone. It has a synthetic pheromone to reduce anxiety.
- give him a Kong stuffed with treats or a rawhide bone to keep him happy and busy when alone. He should only get these when he is alone.
- if he won't touch the Kong or rawhide when alone, but likes them otherwise, he is highly stressed. Drugs may be a good idea.
- get the book I'll Be Home Soon by Patricia McConnell, or do an internet search on "separation anxiety" for further detailed tips, but this is a good start. Start by leaving for short periods of time. and gradually extending the time. unless you want to become a shut in you could get him used to other places take him for short walks gradually extending them. if he likes a relative or friend have them over then bring him to thier house for a short trip. if he gets used to the idea of happy friends outside of the house then he will start to enjoy getting out more. what disilus. said has work for me too. also helpful to put it in a pet taxi. dogs get stress in big space, at the begining close door. after a while it will get to know that the pet taxi is safe place and will get in their by himself. go online to the show "dog wisper show" http://www9.nationalgeographic.com/chann.
