He in his pen crying all day. The only time he's quiet is while I am playing with him. Its not that I don't give him enough attention (I am always playing with him). I've tried ingnoring him, putting another dog in with him, toys, expanding his pen. Some more ideas/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Your puppy is establishing a relationship with it's owner. It is not a bad thing. This is normal for puppies and will continue for 6 to 8 weeks sometimes longer. You should spend this time wisely with your new puppy as it will make things easier as they develop. They're puppies. They do that. Get over it. this is the time he's bonding with you so lots of interaction is needed.

To try and show him that whining will not get his way, do not respond to him when he does this after play time. When he is sitting quietly then reward him with attention. you should be careful not to respond to him every time he whines as he will think that u will give him attention every time he does this and you'll never get him to stop. but on the other hand these first few months are an important bonding time. so if u can get him into a routine so he knows he isn't gonna get played with every time HE wants. routines are very important with dogs. if you can't deal with this, you shouldn't have gotten him. he's a puppy, he's going to cry. why is he in his pen all day? are you training him to go to the door to go out, or do you just let him pee anywhere? we just got a puppy about 4 mths ago, and he did the same thing. you have to be patient with him. how would you have felt if your mother gave you up just cause you cried too much when you were a baby? take responsibility as his owner, and work with him, maybe obedience lessons for him when he's old enough. he might just be missing his mom.
