My chihuahua used to be housebroken and went outside to go to the washroom, but now it's getting too cold out for her liking. I've been trying puppy pads for the past few weeks, and she refuses to go anywhere near them, in fact, she'll go on anything except for the pads! Everytime she has an accident I try to soak it up onto the mat and I take her there right away. Any ideas, or alternatives (Ive heard of doggie litter)? I'm at my wits end - Help!

Answers:

Put a sweater on your dog and bring her outside on a leash. Once she goes, give her treats and lots of love. Don't punish, yell, smack, or rub her nose in waste. These will only make it worse.

I'm a little surprised that the breeder didn't go over any of this with you. Chis can be hard to potty train anyway, and that gets even worse in winter. If you purchased from a reputable breeder, try calling them and asking what they recommend. They can give you lots of tricks. Trust me, they won't mind helping you, after all, a good breeder knows they are responsible for the welfare of the animal for the rest of their life.

Good luck to you! try going to like a pet store or like petsmart they will be able to get you a better answer for this If she is used to going outside, try getting her a sweater and keep her going outside. You do not want to get her used to going in the house, even if it is on a pad. Really, I think the best thing to do is to keep her going outside to go potty. If you train her to go in the house, she won't go outside when it gets warm again. She'll be quite confused. If it gets too cold, let her out just long enough to go potty, then let her back in. I don't know how cold it gets where you are, but even in 0 degree F weather (that would be below 0 in C) she will be fine as long as she's not out very long. If you feel too bad about it, get her a little sweater or jacket. They're not really necessary, but they do help the owners feel better;) Does she normally go in one certain spot? If she does, just put the pad there. it's hard to keep your patience with this kind of thing, but you have to keep at it! She doesn't understand that THAT is where you want her to go. the pads are new to her. Establish her toilet area. Every time she needs to eliminate be sure she has access to this place. Until she develops a strong habit of eliminating here, it is important that you accompany her every time. If she eliminates some where else, then she'll be establishing a habit of eliminating there. Dogs are instinctively clean animals. If they can avoid it, they would rather not soil themselves or their usual eating and sleeping areas. Dogs also naturally develop habits of where they would like to eliminate. Hope this helps! You can try putting the pad outside where she usually goes to get her used to the feel of it. Once she finds it, bring it inside and see if this works. I don't know if you can train her to be any different though. I trained mine on the pads and use outside as an alternative since we work all day, the pads come in handy. She hardly ever has any accidents unless she's mad. Your little lady may just have to get used to a sweater. Good Luck! I would suggest crate training your puppy. I have tried both ways and the best and most beneficial to your puppy is crate training. If you as your vet they will tell you that this is not bad for your puppy and will actually help your relationship with her. The puppy might have one or two accidents but will soon learn that it is her den and then will only go outside and after sometime she will learn that going outside is where she should go. I litterbox trained my yorkie/chihuahua mix using the instructions on the following site. I started at 8 weeks and she's now 6 months and does very well with just an occasional accident.
