Well it's not a puppy anymore so it's likely that the dog needs increased activity and more playtime. Border collies like to have a job to do, and they have a lot of energy.

Is there someone who can take him for a short walk during the day? Also, when the family returns from their hectic day, the dog will want and need attention since it hasn't had the social interaction that everyone else has. It wants to be part of your 'pack'.

A couple of things I also had some luck with was the rubber toys you can put treats in. They have to really work to get a treat out, but it can keep them quite busy for a bit as well as provide a reward. Additionally, I leave either the radio on or the animal planet channel (my dog watches and barks at the tv). Having voices and music in the background is better than complete silence and those are also sounds that he hears when we are at home.

Good luck! well my dog was just as bad so we started giving him a big boiled leg of a lamb bone before we went out. this help so much and we slowly weand him of it now he does not chew or anything. do you keep him out side? we keep our dog tied up out side then we let him off after we come back an we go for regular walks to get him tired. My dog did this too and I bought some spray at Wal-Mart in the pet section That really worked, I think it was called Stop Chew. You just spray it on what the dog keeps chewing on, it smells bad so I couldn't imagine how it taste. Maybe its got a cavity try taking it to the vet for a check up Chewing is a very normal behavior for puppies and dogs.
