I have had a betta for a few weeks. He used to be in a tank right next to another male betta. I got another betta yesterday. When I put that betta's tank right next to my older betta's tank the older one would flp out and flare. I didn't think he would do this, because he used to live next to another male. I put the new one next to the old one today, and NOW he won't flare! Why is this? So he liked being with other bettas, then he didn't, then he did! I don't get it!

Maybe your new Betta is less mature, or a different color. The Bettas in my own tanks are always fairly particular about which fish they don't like
A The best awnser i can think of is that when you fisrt put the new betta next to the old one he got exited becase he is new. Then the next time you put him next to the other betta he was already used to it. All i know is i have had both my bettas for a while and they dont stop flaring. It's just a betta thing. i'm not sure maybe he thought he was threatening but realizes he is not Beta's are very territorial. introducing another Male he doesn't recognize?? gee Betas will fight another male in their territory. Pet stores are notorious for screwing up what sex the fish is; you might have had a female before. Male Bettas do not like each other, and will flare if they see another male. This is quite normal behavior, and thus why they cannot reside in the same tank with one another. yah thats the case
