We have a small-ish common goldfish who is currently living by himself in a bowl. Do you think that I could put him with our Comet? Or would the Comet..

You could try it and find out. Temperments vary with each fish. No matter what, their will be some chasing around to establish who is boss, but the should be able to work it out.

If so, yes you can put together a three inch fish with a 4 inch fish. Usually comet goldfish and common goldfish are the same breed. Do not mix two 4 inch + goldfish in one tank if it is small under 10 gallons.

I can only guess that you have a bowl and a 10 gallon tank, as pet stores never sell the right equipment for goldfish. A comet/common goldfish gets over 12 inches if keep in a health environment. And no, fish do not know that the tank is ten gallons or 150 gallons so they do not grow to the size of the tank, but more to the health of the water. Just like if you feed a child chocolate and coffee all his life, he will be small and malnurished!

Anyway, as long as the tank has enough space and hiding spots for the new and smaller fish, he will be okay. Before adding the new fish, change your tank decor around so that the existing fish "thinks" he swam into the new fish's territory and that will help!
