If you really want to get scientific about it it all has to do with osmoregulation. Each cell in the body of a fish can only retain so much salt and so much water. A fish's body will naturally change to it's environment depending on the salt content in that water that surrounds it. If there is more salt in the water the cells will transfer water out to make the body of the fish the same density as the surrounding water.
Well.some species of fish can only tolerate so much salt..so you stick a freshwater fish in a saltwater environment.what do you think is going to happen?
The cells are going to start releasing water.but with such a high content of salt essential.on a cellular level.the fish looses too much water and becomes dehydrated and dies. because it can't breath in saltwater!? Allergic to sodium? Goldfish are freshwater fish. The saltwater is toxic to them. I dont know everthing about goldfish but i know that when i was little all my mom did was put colder water and the goldfish were shocked. i dont think switching the water is a great idea but you can try if you want Same reason we can't drink too much salt water. It's toxic to both of us. Yes, certain fish require to be in regular water, gold fish are one of them. if i were u i would just put it in regular tap water, thats what i do with my fish. Not only can't the goldfish breathe in saltwater, it's body can't dissolve the salt, it's gills can't filter out the salt in the water causing itself to 'poison' itself. That's why a freshwater fish can't survive in saltwater. Salt water fish have a different kind of slime layer on their skin. A fresh water fish will not be able to sustain proper health conditions when covered with salt. I don't know anything about "breathing" in salt water but it probably effects fish as well. because goldfish cannot use their gills to filter saltwater like they do in freshwater because of the salt ii also clogs up the pores on their bodies Goldfish are made for fresh water they cannot stand the salt in the water it will basically eat away at their bodies until it kills them it's like humans trying to live in fire.
