When I put feed out, my yearling colt turns his butt at me and threatens to kick me. I am not sure what to do? he only does this when I put feed out, when I just go out to work with him, he's fine. I raised him, and he never used to be this way, it started very recently.

The people that answered against whipping are correct please don't start whipping this colt in his area when you feed it is a sure way to get hurt! He is becoming territorial over his feed and horses are herd animals and at times will treat thier human handlers the same way as a herd animal. You need to get his respect for you and whipping him is not the way especially with a colt. Colts have different ways about them than fillies or mares do. If you start to attack at him in his safe territory it will only end up with him being terrified and harder to handle or he will fight back for his home. He is most likely getting to the age where he is starting to get hormonal stallion thing going on, which is why it has just started. It is a good idea to tie him and place his food then wait and let him go to it on your time. This will teach him that you are the one in control of his meals not him. He will learn to respect the fact that he has to wait for you to eat. In the herd the elder, dominant horse tell the weaker ones when to eat the dominant one always gets the first pile, etc until all the horses are eating in their own space. He needs to learn he can't bully you for the food and on the same token he doesn't have to protect his food from you. With colts and stallions it has to be non threatening and non pyhsical training so they aren't threatened. I have one stallion and if you hit or whip him the fight is on and it's from the way he was handled at a younger age by people I bought him from and in his stall he is very territorial with him you have to find ways to get into his mind not physical because no matter what anyone says there is no way you will beat a stud in a fight but you can win mentally. I'm guessing hes a stud, you can do a simple brain surgery to rectify that problem.
