Purpura hemorrhagica is secondary strangles. My mare delt with this 5 years ago. She made it through despite the odds of her severity. I have finally was able to get her back to her normal weight (1,200 v.s 800 when sick) and health. Took a lot of time, expense, vet visits with home alot from school to keep an eye on her (as I was in high school back then when it was sever).

I want to breed her again one last time with in 2 or so years, with vet's okay (who we do check ups all the time). We are doing a "wait and see", even with an "okay" as doing more studies as during pregnancy, she will need vaccinations of Rhino, 4 way etc. So, need to make sure her system is going to be responding well. She can not have the strangles vaccination as that will cause an acute reaction of Purpura. He said most likely, it will be fatal this time.

Has anyone breed their mare afterwards? (if their mare had it?).

Anyone else have and how is your horse today

We lost a couple horses to this when I worked up in Michigan- and we came mighty close to losing a third horse, a gelding named Buck, to this disease. I was giving him 60 cc's of penicillin a day for almost a month when he was really sick, and he lost close to 300 pounds, but he eventually pulled through. I haven't heard of anyone breeding a mare that recovered from it before- but that is probably because all of the horses I have known who had this disease died from it. If your vet approves and thinks that the mare can carry and have a normal foal, then I'd say go for it !! Good luck. I had a gelding that had bastard strangles which is the most severe form of it (80% fatality rate). A year later he was okay (and several thousand dollars!). I had one vet that said they would never pass him on a health test and others that said he was "normal". I would do more research on it and get several professional opinions. There have been a couple of ppl on there that have been through is, some made it, some didn't. Its a nasty illness and very small chance of survival. You are extremely lucky. I have a mare that had bastard strangles as a 2 yr old. We bred her with no problems as a 5 yr old and several times since then. She is now 16.

I once owned a gelding that developed purpura hemorrhagica following a prolonged sinus infection. He was 16 yrs old at the time and I almost lost him, but he pulled through the crisis with the use of a blood transfusion and Vitamin K. He had a long recovery after that, but eventually regained his health and lived to the age of 22.
