i can't speak for all small mammels, but mice and rats have bad vision. they do have large whiskers that stick out of their faces and brush nearby objects, and this is why rats and mice tend to creep around close to walls, so they can feel their way around.

they have their eyes set on the sides of their head to give them more range of sight since they are commonly prey animals, unlike predators (like cats) which have very concentrated fields of vision from their eyes being set on the front of their heads.
