Why do we keep pets when we know..

My childhood dog Zoe died when I was 18 and I thought Id never recover. My cat Herbert died last year and it was horrible, I have a 14 yr old cat and .. 

My childhood dog Zoe died when I was 18 and I thought I'd never recover. My cat Herbert died last year and it was horrible, I have a 14 yr old cat and a 18mth old dog. Hopefully I will outlive them but know the ultimate pain | will go through. Why do we do this to ourselves? Is the answer to get another pet straight away or give up because it's just too much to deal with?

to keep us company while they're there Why do we have friends or family members we associate with? They will do the same. It is about the time that is spent with them when alive. That is why people keep pets. They are worth all the love. It it so hard to lose a pet, but so worth it to still have them. they will like us in the time that they still live and they will be your best friend I think that we keep them too long. I knew that my dog was sick but i did not have the heart to euthanize him nor the 80 dollars. They give us so very much while they are with us, that we would do it all over gain and we do. Just enjoy your pets while they are here as they are happy to have us as well. I have been through 2 cats, and 2 dogs within the past three years. I know it is hard. We have anohter dog and a kitten now, the love is so worth it. Because we're human and we want to love things. In the case of pets I'd say get another one because loving something helps to heal a broken heart. we keep pets because we love them and knowing that they had a better life because of us. I've never lost a pet other than fish before I have 2 cats that are 15 months old and I hope that we have them for a long time. it will be sad when they die but I know that I've made their lives happier. don't get a pet right after you loose one, unless you bounce back that quick and if you do, maybe you shouldn't be owning pets. wait till you are done grieving before getting another pet. then when you are ready, go to the shelter and pick one out. It's the companion ships between pet and owner, everyone passes on it's life. Just think that when you pass all your buddies will be waiting for you and you can spend eternity with them. all that heartbreaking is worth it to have loved them even if it was just for a short while, like the saying goes "its better to have loved and lost then to never have loved at all" my grandma passed away 2 years ago and she had this dog that passed away about 2 weeks ago, she had that dog for about 12 years, it was heart breaking to see a life she really cared about pass on because we enjoy life with them too much too think about the end if the pet is too much to deal with because it's old and it's major functions are failing, then you should think about getting it put to sleep (we had to do this to my 11 yr old white german hepard who was suffering)
