I just wanted to respond about rats needing glass cages/tanks. That is one of the worst things you can do. Rats wee a lot more than other rodents(they drink a lot more as well) and the ammonia builds up very quickly in tanks and will cause breathing problems (which rats are prone to). Rats love to climb and a tank offers no opportunity to do that. It's also hard to attach hammocks, toys and water bottles to tanks.
Hamster cages are too small for rats. You need the biggest cage you can get. Ferret cages work well as they are huge. Beware of bar spacing though, you dont want it to big. Absolutely! yes it depends what shape it is in if it still looks like new then yes it would be good for your fancy rat Depending on the size of the cage. Normally, a rat would need a much larger cage than a hamster. It definitely depends on the size of the cage. Rats get pretty big and need plenty of room to play. I use a ten-gallon aquarium with a wire extension on top. I bought it at PetSmart and it has three levels. My two rats love it. I also bought a rodent cardboard tube and they like that too. SURE Y NOT Yes, a rat would need a bigger cage.
Other than that, if you use your old hamster cage, you risk infecting your rat with disease or whatever germs and bacteria in that cage.
Also, it has to be appropriate for whatever pet you put in there. You know you should consider glass if you have a rat, instead of using plastic or wood etc.
For example, if a hamster died of wet tail in that cage, you'd have to clean the cage throughly. Like, rinse it in disinfectent, chlorine, wash it with soap.. etc. If you didnt wash the cage properly, the next hamster will get infected real quick. might be too small, rats need a lot of room to be happy and get exercise
