I'm not sure about flaxseed oil, but my horse coliced a few months ago. That was the first time she had ever coliced before. The vet told me to help prevent colic I should feed my horses 3 cups wheat bran and 3 cups water mixed together. He said I need to only feed it twice a week cause. I have fed it ever since and they havent coliced once. They love it too. I also put in cut up carrots and apples and I also add a half scoop of apple flavored electrolytes.

Oh yeah and to respond to the answers above there are many types of colic besides sand colic, my horse had an impaction colic and that was due to weather change. Also feeding a steady routine diet wont prevent colic. My horse was on a steady routine diet and she coliced. I dont know about that one Ive never heard of flaxinseed helping, but I have heard of people useing human laxtives on them and it works. look at horseadvice.com they have more thing to try, for this and many other things with horses Not That i know of. The Vet knows though!!

Just dont put the Horse somewhere wear where there is sand and feed the horse on the ground, They will SAND COLIC. A steady routine diet is what will help the most. Whats causing it?

Bran is a saviour of many a colicy horse so maybe add a SMALL amount to start with, but keep a diary on what it is eating.include ALL the titbits! Many horses that are chronic colicers are stressed. Look for a pattern. Does the horse colic the night before you head out for a show? The day you get to a show? Consider equine massage therapy to help your horse relax. If it is a stress colic the massage therapist can even get the colic to stop. i use bentonite..it is drilling mud from any well driller, you put a cup in the feed every once in a while, and it prevents sand colic, and works great for a horse that has sand in the belly, to lift it out, an old vet taught me this years ago and in 25 years i have not had a horse colic on me, and have had great results on horses that where brought to me on their death bed, and did this and had full recoveries, so i know it works..the bentonite is cheap and is the best thing i have ever used.dont use flaxseed if you dont use the bentonite go to the feed store and get something as there are many products out there, also pay attention to your horses diet and how much he eats, if he is prone to colic. alfalfa that is high in protein level and has a lot of clovers in it is more prone to cause colic if not watched.we feed alfalfa and grass togather and found this to be the best for feed for our ranch horses and our competetion horses.good luck
