To feed the bee larvae as well as the whole hive during winter (when there are no flowers around to make honey.) It is the food for their larva and newly hatched babies and winter food for the hive.
Honey is laid down by bees as a food source. In cold weather or when food sources are scarce, bees use their stored honey as their source of energy. By contriving for the bee swarm to make its home in a hive, mankind has been able to semi-domesticate the insects. In the hive there are three types of bee: the single queen bee, a seasonally variable number of drone bees to fertilize new queens and some 20,000 to 40,000 worker bees. The worker bees raise larvae and collect the nectar that will become honey in the hive
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/honey. The official, scientific name for bee poop is "honey."
And yes, they store it in their hives . mini-storage units are way to expensive these days.
bzzzzzzzzzzzzz u want to store it in ur house, y we store our things in our place? Obviously so I can have honey on my toast in the mornings! Or maybe it's as the first lady said, to feed thier young ;) There is no "nectar" since nectar is converted by the worker bee's glands while digesting the nectar from the flower.
The nectar is actually converted into honey and honey is stored in honeycombs inside the hive. no they actually make honey from the necter, so they actually store honey and not necter.
The bees drink the necter and when they get to the hives they actually vomit the nectar up Where else would they store it!Look at their minute body parts and microcosmic activities. so that human beings can steal it and use it for their own purposes.. i think the answer lies with the answer top this question--
"Why do humans store their food in the refrigerator?" infact they didn't store the necter.
the necter in real sense is their excreta that they egest after digesting their food material. Honey bees don't have the required mouth parts to eat solid food,so they got to eat only liquid diet. The most abundant food source in Nature is honey (nector) which in liquid form.
