We live in Mexico, and our new casa has a tree in the backyard that is home to two huge (3 foot) green iguanas. We are very excited about this, and then realized that our three cats might be in harm's way - will the iguanas pose any danger to them?

I have an Iguana and I also have 3 cats. My old cat leaves the Iguana alone but the two younger cats are my hunters - they fight with the Iguana and the Iguana always wins. The tail is like a whip and when the cat is hit by one the welts are sometimes bad.
On one occasion the Iguana hit my small black cat just right and so hard it ripped his skin open like a knife - the vet could not believe it. So the answer is Yes - If you have hunting cats that like to test other animals they may be in for a rude awakening.
Iguana are usually very calm and are vegetarians but cross one the wrong way and their defense mechanism of tail and claws can hurt quite bad. In the wild Iguanas can also carry Salmonella so be careful yourself and if you touch one always make sure to use the hand gel that kills bacteria.

CATS LIKE TO PLAY with them.. ,, It's the other way around. The cats will kill the iguanas unless the cats are declawed. they can take care of themselfs pretty well.. they might fight it out tho. that is if some one doesnt eat them first. i was told that mexicans eat iguanas. that saddens me.. :-( Cats are a menace to wildlife. Keep them indoors. hell yes there is danger to your cats even so called tame iggys attack a human and can definately do damage so a wild iggy will shurely be able to harm a small cat either by biting and scratching or the wild whip of a tail
