Pushups are a form of communication and mean different things depending on how many pushups the lizard does, the position of the tail and legs, and whether the lizard inflates his or her throat, says Emilia Martins, biology professor at the University of Oregon.
Mountain spiny lizards also do pushup displays-as do many species all over the country. These five-inch-long reptiles are territorial and do furious pushups to warn others away. Even a female, much more aggressive than the females of most lizard species, will charge and bite intruders that don't heed her display I have never seen a lizard do a push up. To keep in shape. I don't know, but I've seen the lizards in my back yard doing that. they dont Duh! So they can try out for GEICO Commercials silly! ;) They usually do it to intimidate. Mine used to do that when I would try to pick it up to look bigger. no they do it to like look around and see if theres predatores, are whats going on, and forms of communications, or if they here something they are showing off how big they can look. to intimidate other lizards or even to defent themselves from a cat or yourself.
but the ultimately funniest case of this behaviour i remember when i saw an anole (American chameleon) doing push ups really vigorously. they have bright red throat so he was also puffing the throat like mad. i saw him from a window so i didint know what he was trying to ward off. i took a look and i saw it was a red hibiscus flower dangling up and down with wind! I neednt say the flower finally won! To assert dominance. the wild lizards to that when their mating. thats the way they impress their mate. i dont know i guess it wants to have fun it isn't pushups it is head banging..they just do it for hello.and what ever else they want..sometimes it mating
