In one of your previous questions you stated that you brought your guinea pig from a pet store, pet stores are notorious for selling piggys with URI (upper respiratory infection) and mites. After buying a guinea pig from a pet store you should stop by the vet just to get her checked out.

Has your guinea pig lost any hair? Guinea pigs scratch, that is normal. Excessive scratching on the other hand is not normal, if accompanied by hair loss it is an indication that your piggy may have mites and/or lice.

I would suggest that you take him to your closest exotic vet, if they are able to confirm my suspecion of mites then they will be able to treat it. It should be treated with Ivermectin and it should be repeated at least once 7 to 10 days later.

Good Luck. He might have mites. Try using pine shavings in his cage, mites hate pine shavings. This worked for my hamsters. ur guinea pig might scratch his self cause of sometin in his cage he could have fleas. Your guinea pig probably has mites. Occasional scratching is okay, but scratching in excess is a warning sign. I suggest you visit a reputable veterinarian that specializes in small mammals. He might just be itchy or he could have lice and/ or mites. To get rid of this problem just buy lice and mite spray from a pet store and spray both your guinea pig and it's cage. He could be allergic to something in the cage, he may have mites or he could have scabies ask your local pet store person. first of all dont use any pine shavings unless they are killn dried pine shavings. the regular ones are bad for ur guinea pig. second u have to take it to the vet. no one can say for sure with out seeing the animal. if it is mites changing to a bedding that is bad for ur animal (due to oils in the wood) is certainly not going to help. the vet can give u medicine to treat the mites. good luck. i hope ur guinea pig is feeling better!
