But in every case, and every pet, it is the parents' responsibility to care for the pet, make sure it's fed, watered, cleaned, and given plenty of attention.

I believe that taking care of pet is a great way for a child to learn responsibility. However, most children are not ready to take on 100% of the care, and the pet that is forgotten suffers greatly.

Lori no no no no no! the last gerbil i had brought my dad to the hospital. (no the gerbil didn't drive him there) but he bit him so hard and wouldn't let go...and my dad had to go to the hospital. i think a female hamster would be a better choice. (unless you ask to hold the gerbil and he/she seems friendly) yes it depends on the child. Gerbils are pretty fast and lively, I'd suggest a hamster (not a dwarf one) as they are slower and more friendly as a rule. Gerbils can be hard to catch and handle for young children. Gerbils are great pets! I own two!

Gerbils are horrible. They bite, and are never very nice.

Guinea pigs are good pets. They are bigger, and although take a bit more work, they are actually pretty smart, and can learn their name, tricks, ect. i Guess. they are fast and need alot of work. you have to refil the water everyday, play with it everyday and chage food and have excersise stuff. its can be alot of work aside from homework and everything.
